I grew up in a small township surrounded by coal mines, breathing polluted air and struggling to access clean drinking water. I used to think that clean water was a privilege, and that mine dumps and pollution were simply part of life. That asthma was just something that “runs in the family,” that it was normal for houses to have cracks in them, and that mines and power stations were simply part of our lives.
I learned that everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being, and that this right is immediately realisable. It is through understanding the law that we can protect ourselves and the environment.
